Artwork for Oncology Unit in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin

At the same time as ‘The Wave’ artwork was being made I was also working on a piece for the Beaumont Hospital (exact same layout of unit) but with a different theme. This one is called ‘The Chain of Charms’ and involved members of staff, patients and family giving their thoughts and images to incorporate into the piece.

Everybody needs a little luck. Some people believe in the power of prayer, a higher being, or a lucky charm. Some get their inner strength from the love of their family or the kindness of strangers. Whatever keeps people going through adverse times is a very personal choice. I have added some of these personal supports into the  ceramic artwork to make a very touching and hopefully engaging piece.

Throughout time, different cultures have worn charms often in the form of a piece of jewellery with amulets which have important meanings for the wearer. These remind them of significant events in their life or are a symbol of a belief. This artwork is situated in the corridor going into the linac unit and in the following corridor/waiting area and is made from a high fired porcelain clay with images and photographs fired into the surface of the glaze.
