A Good Day for Drying, 2011

St Josephs Community Nursing Unit, Beaumont Hospital Dublin
Commissioned by: Beaumont Hospital Arts Team

Project Detail
Materials: Artwork in glazed and printed ceramic
Techniques: Hand made ceramics, earthenware lustre glaze, digital ceramic prints
Dimensions: 11m x 0.8m
Description:
Ceramic washing line running along the corridor beside the day room. This artwork depicts places in the area and gives a sense of belonging and a talking point for the residents of the care unit.
These shapes flow upwards along the stairwell and create a movement through the hospital space.
Concept:
A long corridor facing the day room in the nursing home is the location of this humorous artwork depicting a windy washing day complete with dressing gowned woman, local seagulls and migrating geese (all found in the area). There’s even a reference to the Sam Maguire Cup won in 2011. Clothes swaying in the wind have references to local areas and include some older maps of the location. The whole set is meant to brighten the department and give patients something interesting to look at and talk about.
